I have a SONY HDR HC9 camera and I was wondering if there is anyway besides firewire and to import my videos?

This is because the usb seems to do nothing, sony vegas wont pick it up

The USB connection is for stills. If your PC hasn't already got one you'll need to install a firewire card. They're cheap, easy to install and readily available. You'll also need a firewire cable.

Which is a better camcorder: The Sony HDR-HC9 or the Canon HV30?

I want to use it for low light conditions such as partys, take nice still shots, have good audio, and good manual controls and nicer picture. Which camcorder is better and why?

Also these are both better than their earlier versions right? The Sony HDR-HC7 and the Canon HV20.

I'd go with the HV30. While you're not going to get super low-light performance like the pro(ish) Sony VX-2100... most HDV pro cameras don't perform down to 1 lux, either.

The HV30 has a large (1/2.7") sensor, which is about as good as they come in consumer camcorders. My HV10 has the same sensor, and I was kind of amazed at how it compares to my higher-end Sony HDV model. I bough the HV10 as a backpacking camera, but I use it pretty regularly for any "stealth" work, and it does fine video, though it doesn't offer the HV30's 24p or 30p modes.

A particular advantage of the HV30 over the HDC-HC7 is its 24p mode. That's 24fps progressive, which delivers a "film" like look, versus the video look of the usual 60i video. But as well, since you're shooting at a lower frame rate, you can shoot at a slower shutter speed... so while Canon doesn't actually publish lux rating on this one, they're measuring about 4 lux in tests... which compares to many of the 3-chip models using 1/4" CCDs, like the Canons. The review below includes low-light testing, and you can probably find the Sony at the same site (and they mention the Sony as not being quite as good, in the Canon review).

As with most consumer cams, it also has a "Night Shot" type mode, which means you're shooting in monochromatic infrared, and at least have the option of using an IR LED on the the camera as a light. Some people have fun with this, others hate it.

That's not to suggest this will work absolutely as well as any pro camera in every situation, or offer as many adjustments. But assuming your budget isn't about 3x-4x the price of the HV30, that's probably not an issue for you.

Both are consumer grade camcorders - so they have small lenses and small imaging chips. Low light is not something they do well. If you need good lowlight, you need a camcorder with big lenses and big imaging chips... like (on the low-end of pro/prosumer) the Sony HDR-FX1, Canon XHA1 or Panasonic HVX200 series...

How much does a Sony HDR-HC9 camcorder cost?

Sony HDR-HC9 Handycam - Can some show me a picture of the i.Link Cable that comes in the box?

.

Here is a link to the Operating Guide for the HDR-HC9:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=HDRHC9

Refer to page 36. The supplied i.LINK cable is a 4-pin to 4-pin i.LINK cable.

Here is one from Fry's Electronics:
http://shop1.frys.com/product/4338465?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

i.LINK, is Sony's name for FireWire or IEEE1394a. They removed two power pins. The other Firewire400 configuration is a 6-pin. There are 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cables.

Sony HDR-HC9 Firewire?

Im planning on getting the Sony HDR-HC9 HD handy cam. And im also getting the Toshiba Satellite X205 SLI5. Both the camera and the laptop have a firewire port that look exactly the same, I think they are both 4-pin ports. So all im asking is if the Camera comes with a Firewire cable thats 4-pin to 4-pin, so that i can capture footage from the camera to the laptop.

Sony HDR-HC9 Firewire cable?

does the Sony HDR-HC9 Handycam come with a 4 pin to 4 pin iLink Firewire cable, so that i can connect it to a laptop with a 4 pin Firewire port. The Laptop is a Toshiba Satellite X205 SLi5. Thanks!

Yes. Download the Operating Guide here:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=HDRHC9
Refer to page 12 (included in the box) and page 36 (section C - "i.LINK - supplied")

This presumes the Firewire driver and port on the computer are operating correctly.

Sony HDR-HC9 or Canon HV30?

I am looking for a reasonably priced (under $1000) camcorder that will record HD quality. I have found the Sony HDR-HC9 and Canon HV30. I would like to know which one (if either) has better video quality, which one is the best quality hardware, which one comes with the most accessories included in the box.

Also any other cameras that are HD and under $1000 would be good knowledge.

Both are fine consumer grade camcorders.

The HV30 does 24p, the HC9 does not.

The HC9 has a built-in infrared emitter for capturing monochomatic, video in zero visible light - the HV20 does not.

The HC9 has the ability to burst a high frame rate for a couple of seconds so playback at normal speed is slow-motion (this is not hidef quality video)... the HV20 does not.

Both can do 1080i high definition (HDV - by definition, 16:9) and 4:3 or 16:9 standard definition (DV). Do not mix HDV and DV format on a single tape - you can do it, but it gets confusing for the computer which wants only one format when importing. Both have a mic in (1/8" or 3.5mm) jack and manual audio control.

To compare the accessories in the box, go to the product website or download the camcorder's manual (the list of the stuff in the box is in the first few pages):
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=177&modelid=16206

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=HDRHC9&LOC=3

Since you did not tell us what you want to shoot, it is difficult to recommend.

Use a tripod or monopod.
You may also need a camera bracket with a cold accessory shoe to hold an external mic or video light.
Get at least 1 rechargeable high capacity battery.
Consider a wide and or tele lens add-on.
Consider an external mic (stereo, shortgun, lavaliere).
Consider a video light that does not use the camcorder's battery for power.
Get a sturdy case (like one from Pelican or SKB) to protect your investment.

Help on the Sony HDR-HC9?

ok so i've had to do more research after discovering that my computer doesn't have a firewire outlet. and an adapter doesn't work on video. so there goes my dream camera of the Canon HV20. oh well. i was wondering if the HDR-HC9 works for a USB outlet or does any one know of a camera that is HD and works with a PC USB outlet. and that can get 24p or cinema mode or something? help please?

ALL miniDV tape based camcorders use firewire to transfer DV or HDV format video. The Sony HDR-HC9 is a miniDV tape based camcorder and requires firewire for transfer.

Hard disc drive and Flash memory based camcorders use USB for video data file copying - but do not use DV/HDV. They use highly compressed MPEG2 (standard definition) or AVCHD (high definition) file formats so you need to be careful which video editor you want to use.

Since you did not tell us which computer you are using, we have no way to know if you can add a firewire port...

Sony HDR-HC9 and Final Cut Pro ?

Hi I am an HDR HC9 user and I am able to capture clips off of my camera, the quality looks pretty good but i think that I am doing something wrong. This question is really for those who have the camera but if anyone else has knowledge of how to then by all means share with me lol. I would like to know what the best steps would be to capture high quality footage from the camera and onto FCP ( my version is 5.0). Anyway that is all. And i hate to post another question within a question, but are there any 35mm lenses for the Sony HDR HC9? Thanks alot!

Standard definition DV imported to FCP (or iMovie) will use about 14 gig of computer hard drive space per hour of imported video.

High Definition HDV imported to FCP (or iMovieHD) will use about 44 gig of computer hard drive space per hour of imported video.

A standard 60 minute (SP) miniDV tape can hold 60 minutes of DV or 63 minutes of HDV.

When you launch FCP, how have you specified the FCP preferences? I am running version 5.1.4. I had to do a custom installation of the "Apple Intermediate Code" from the OSX system disc. Without AIC, FCP cannot deal with 1080i HDV (which is what the HC9 captures - just like my HC1 and FX1). With your HC9 connected and in "Play" mode, when you launch FCP, under File, select "Easy Setup" or Audio/Video settings. Use the AIC selections that make sense under Sequence preset and Capture Preset...

Yes, there are several 35mm adapters for the HC9. Just do a search with your favorite browser using "HC9 35mm" and you'll get hits. Yu can do much of the same DOF thing by increasing the shutter speed on your HC9.

sony hdr hc9 mic input. Mono or Stereo?

Is it mono or stereo? the microphone input jack on sony hdr hc9?
Cheers!
