Sony HDR-FX1000
If you're looking to go HD but are not ready to give up the safety and economy of recording HD to DV tape, the Sony HDR-FX1000 is a full HD high performance camcorder. The HDR-FX1000 features Sony’s ClearVid 1/3-inch CMOS, with a 45-degree rotated pixel layout, a 3.2-inch LCD screen, progressive scan at 1080/24p and 30p (giving video productions a film-like look), and 20x optical zoom.
For those people who say DV tape is becoming antiquated, that prediction has been around for a long time now and if you look at what happened with HVS tape, well you can see that DV probably has quite a bit of life in it yet. It's a stable way to store your footage unlike FireWire hard drives which can fail. It's still cheaper than flash cards and until the camera makers come up with something really a lot better, many shooters especially working in event video and docs are sticking with tape for the time being.
The single biggest complaint about this camera is that it doesn't have XLR input for audio and while XLR is preferable you can get a BeachTek XLR adapter for about $219 CDN. Compare the cost of the FX1000 at just under $4000 CDN and to get the same camera with the XLR input you'll need to fork over about $5,000 CDN.
