to keep or not to keep
Sometimes in life, we have to make a tough decisions - especially when it deals with the new and the old. In that, we find ourselves between to move on or to stay where we are.
And today, I find myself in that place where I have to make a decision on something very close to my heart - my camera.
I bought my first compact point and shoot camera a year ago before my trip to Florida. I didn't have much in my thought when I was looking around for one, except that it has to be compact and slim so I can take it anywhere without feeling like I am carrying a brick.
I knew I was looking for a Canon because I used one for my final year project (it belongs to the university) and I really liked the images it produced (besides that I have also familiarize myself with its manual functions). But back then, the IXUS (the slimmest of Canons) was over my humble budget and I have to settle for something lesser. An alternate good bargain of compacts is from the Olympus range and in the end, I went home with Fe-320.
I was persuaded by the salesperson to get the Fe-320 from Olympus, as it was the latest in the market (it was just the 2nd week of release when I bought it). And because it was so new, there were no freebies that came along with it. Hence I need to purchase my own memory card, the leather casing, the extra lithium battery (which I got from Florida) and even the screen protector (which cost a bloody RM40 for a 2.7in piece!). Altogether, this baby cost me RM8xx but I was excited nevertheless, as it was my first camera.
Reflecting on why I chose this model, perhaps I should list down the reasons for my future reference:
1) It is one of the very few compacts that gave me the freedom to adjust the ISO, exposure level and white balance (Nikon's compacts were stiffer on that)
2) It was light, slim and compact - just the way I like it.
3) It was 8.0MP (which I later realized it is not all super as the MP climbs up - it tends to produce images with more noise - but it depends on the sensor's quality)
4) It looks cool in black ;)
The verdict after using it for a year?
1) I am very satisfied with the adjustable features, it gave me the flexibility to shoot different kind of shots of the same subject
2) I carried it to almost everywhere I went and it is small enough to be tucked snugly into my jean's pocket anytime
3) The 8.0MP part proved to be rather insignificant in value as it compromised the noise characteristics in my images - especially images taken during the night, they are very grainy/noisy (shows that the sensor 'tak berkualiti')
4) It still looks cool in black ;)
After having this camera for a year, I have come to know so much more about the technical parts of a digital camera more than I ever did before. Not that I am an expert now (because the more I know, the more I need to know..! ) but I can be assured myself of what I am looking for in the next compact digital that I will buy.
Which brings me to the main thought of this entry....
I want to get a new compact camera, this time I am real sure it is going to be a Canon Powershot but... I don't know what to do with Fe-320 :(
Should I just keep Fe-320 and still get a new Canon or, sell off Fe-320 and use the money to get the new Canon? I'm seriously unsure about this.
Well...
To keep - is for the sentimental value and, to not keep - is for being easy on my pocket value (as I am also saving up for a few bigger investments, I'm trying to be prudent with whatever that I can save).
So the questions to ask myself are:
1) Do I need the Canon?
- I want a Canon
2) Is the Fe-320 spoilt?
- No, but it is as good as spoilt with the quality of images it produces
3) Am I just fussy?
- Yes, I am and I have the right to!
4) What are you going to do with Fe-320 when I get a Canon?
- I don't know...
Maybe it's just me and today. Perhaps tomorrow I'm able to get over this and settle with my humble Fe-320 and do something more productive: fatting up my piggy bank for my D90...

How can i use my olympus fe-320 camera as webcam?
I've no manual.
Manual or not, it is not a webcam.
It has automatic shutoff to extend the battery life
It is too high quality to transmit video streaming at 30 fps
The batteries usually die within 45 minutes or so.
No software came with your camera to run a webcam.
Just look for a nice $25 webcam and be done with it.
I am looking for a simple to use, compact digital camera. Olympus FE-340 or FE-320 which is better?
They seem very similar in compactness and being user friendly.

How to manually adjust the shutter speed? (Olympus FE-320)?
As the title stated above, I just want to know how to adjust the shutter speed. For example, 1/8, 1/16, and even higher. Thank you!
You can't adjust the shutter speed directly because of the aforementioned limitation. However, you can use a higher or lower ISO to give the camera more or less room to adjust the shutter speed or you can switch to one of the speed-focused scene modes (sports, children, fireworks, night, etc.). The camera will prioritize a faster shutter speed with scene modes like sports and children and a slower shutter speed for the fireworks and night modes.
Olympus FE-320 Blurred Pictures?
I just got a reconditioned Olympus FE-320 and the pictures come out really blurred. Any recommendations?
Thanks!
First test the camera outdoors in bright sun ... it the images are out of focus or blurry, then you need to send it back. If the images produced outdoors are not blurry or out of focus, then it could be your low light technique is part or most of the problem
Underwater housing for Olympus Fe-320?
I need an underwater housing (not the plastic bag type) but solid plastic for my Olympus FE-320.Could anyone tell me if the underwater housing for the Olympus FE-230 fit my FE-320. I have a FE-230 which is broken but compared up to the 320 there almost the same size. The 320 isa little deeper and higher but no more than 2mm.The position of the control buttons are the same so should it work.Ive checked the olympus website but theres no housing listed Can anyone help.
Deciding whether to test it or not is purely a matter of weighing judgment...it should be big enough; and weighing love of the camera...what it there's a tiny little leak?
If you're going to try it, first test the thing for leaks without the camera inside, and then put the camera in and test by shortly dunking it in a bathtub or equivalent space. Search religiously for leaks, and if there are none, be happy. All this assumes, of course, that the camera fit inside it and it was able to latch closed securely.
Olympus FE-320?
I just got the Olympus FE-320 camera and I really like it. However, I can't figure out to take black and white/sepia photos.. Please help if you have this camera :)
Thanks Chris :) But i would really like to edit them on my computer.. Since if i want to take 40 pictures B&W its going to take me a long time to convert them to B&W.. Anyone know how to take B&W pics with this camera?
But i would really like to edit them on my camera*
screwdriver is right
Look at this link.

You will see that there is no mention of a black and white option on your camera.
Since until we actually look at our images on a large screen, we don't really know which photos are "keepers". Pick the best of the 30 or so shots and then using the desaturation tool and level tool to adjust the black threshold, white threshold and mid-tone adjustment and convert them to black and white.
Not only is this process the best way to produce black and white images from digital files, the control you have over each one will convince you it is probably the best way to produce high quality black and white prints for you too. It is still faster than printing a black and white image in a darkroom using a negative.
Transferring photos from Olympus FE-320 to computer?
I used to have a Canon iXus-i Zoom camera, and one of the things I liked about it was that when I imported photos from the camera to the desktop it automatically sorted them in folders labeled by date.
Now I have a new Olympus FE-320, which comes with this software called Olympus Master 2. I'm not very familiar with it yet but what I really want to do is to have this software automatically arrange my photos when I upload them to the computer. Like, arrange them in folders by date of when the photos were taken, like what the software for my Canon did. I find I have to make the folders myself and then check the datestamp of the photos before I paste the photos in a specific folder. It's a hassle and not to mention, I get really lazy sometimes so I just put all pics in one folder - but being very OCD, that irks me.
Help anyone?
How do I do that in Windows? The only way I know is to copy-paste the pictures the USB way and in doing that I still have to make folders and choose which photos to go in it and stuff like that.
If the Olympus software is not doing what you want it to windows will do it. Just use windows instead of the Olympus software and save it in my pictures. Windows will create a folder by date.
Can I recharge my camera battery before it went flat?
As, the title implied above, can I recharge my camera (Olympus FE-320) battery before it went flat? What will happen if I charge it before it went flat? will it life become shorter? Will the durability of the battery goes lower than before? Please let me know, thank you.
Yes, the FE 320 uses a rechargeable Lithium battery, that you can charge before it goes flat.
The red light goes on while it's charging
and goes out when it's fully charged. A full charge takes up to 5 hours. But much less if partially drained.
Which digital camera is the best for me?
I wanna purchase a digital camera. I have several brand which caught my attention. Please help to advise. My budget around ~ USD 220
Olympus FE-320
Sony Cybershot - not sure which model??
Canon??
I am prefer for pixel around 7-8MP, have advance feature such as smile shot, face detection, high ISO for internal and dark place.
Could anyone advise me.
Thanks
First, do you really trust the opinion of someone who can't even spell the name of their camera when its on the front of the camera? Its CANON, not cannon folks.
Second, since dropping and drowning are the leading killers of digital cameras, why not consider the Olympus Stylus 850SW? Waterproof to 10 feet and shockproof to a 5 foot drop it can go anywhere with relative safety. Take any of the cameras you listed to the beach or pool and odds are you'll be buying a new camera.
