Richard W. Havens, 89, of Little Compton EastBayRI.com
Richard W. Havens, 89, of Little Compton, died in Sakonnet Bay Manor, Tiverton, on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010. He was the husband of Sally (Atwater) Havens, for the past 46 years. He was predeceased by his first wife, Carolyn Louise (Jameson) Havens.
Born in Philadelphia, Penn., a son of the late Earl and Anna G. (Wick) Havens, Dick’s roots were in and around Philadelphia where he lived most of his life, summering in Little Compton before moving there permanently 10 years ago. He was a graduate of Episcopal Academy, Merion, Penn., Class of 1938, and went on to the University of Pennsylvania. His performance and record at Penn were outstanding in all respects and he received the prestigious Senior “Spoon” award for his efforts and many contributions to the university. He graduated from the distinguished Wharton School at Penn in 1942 with a B.S. in economics and an M.B.A. from the Wharton Graduate School in 1948.
Mr. Havens joined the United States Marine Corps in 1942 and became an officer attached to the Marine Corps Schools as an artillery instructor in Quantico, Va., then with the third Marine Division in the Pacific Theater during World War II, retiring as a major in 1947.
His professional career began as an administrative assistant at Penn and from there he went on to several positions in the world of finance. In 1953 he was appointed president and chief executive officer of the Jenkintown Bank and Trust Co. At the age of 33 he was the youngest bank president in the country and thereafter it was from achievement to next achievement until his eventual retirement as president and chairman of the board of the Industrial Valley Bank. In the process he was highly active in banking associations and as a member of various corporate, hospital and educational boards.
There was a delightful social side to Dick. As the English might say, he was an affably “clubbable” man. Some of his favorite organizations over the years: the Merion Cricket, Philadelphia and The Rittenhouse Clubs, the Gulph Mills Golf Club, The Racquet Club of Philadelphia, and the Sakonnet Golf Club in Little Compton. He enjoyed these all.
Surviving in addition to his wife are sons, R. Wick Havens, Peter J. Havens and David A. Havens; daughters, Wendy Wood, Peggy Barrett, Ann McIlvain and Jane Tellor; stepchildren, Dorothy Bettle, Eleanor A. Bettle and Daniel Bettle; 23 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late John W. Havens.
His memorial service will be held Saturday, Fe. 20, at 11 a.m. in St. Andrews by-the- Sea Church, 182 Willow Ave., Little Compton. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to The Episcopal Academy Alumni & Development Office, 1785 Bishop White Drive, Newton Square, PA 19073. Has anyone had any problems with their Olympus Fe-20 digital camera freezing while viewing pictures?
I have an Olympus FE-20 Digital Camera, it is only 2 months old and has been working great until yesterday. I was looking through my pictures, and all of a sudden the camera froze. I couldn't turn it off, move forward or backwards...the only way to fix it was to open the battery slot. The battery was fully charged, and there was still tons of room on the memory card. What is happening and what is the problem?
Most NiMH rechargeable batteries lose charge and should be recharged when not used for two weeks, but the 2000mAh batteries mentioned below are new formula NiMH batteries that hold charge for one year when not used. Also, 2000mAh batteries seem to have a longer life. Did not like them at first, but have 12 of these batteries over five years old that are still as good as new.
Higher mAh batteries that are about half as old still work well in flashlights, but won't start my camera. This link is about prolonging the life of lithium-based batteries which typically last from two to three years, but are very expensive. The Sony series G rechargeable 960mAh lithium-ion battery is $49.88 at Walmart.

A friend asked me to clean and charge her new 2000mAh Duracell batteries as described in the last link. Those batteries are still going strong after four months of normal use and haven't been recharged.
Camera reports batteries low, but is it low charge or bad electrical contacts? Overcharging can ruin good batteries! The secret to making digital cameras work better is having good electrical contacts between batteries and camera.

Digital cameras require lots of power. Bad electrical contacts can cause lots of problems so battery and camera contacts must be cleaned properly. Batteries may be fully charged, but camera will indicate "low" if contacts are not really good. The LCD screen is a low steady load, but when lens extension, optical zoom, focus, and flash charging are added in the capture mode; the load is very heavy. Bad contacts make cameras do strange things like making bad pictures or shutting off with the lens out.
CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with temperature monitor, trickle charge technology, and safety timer ($9.76) at Walmart. Use pre-charged 2000mAh Duracell ($12.97) or RayOVac ($5.97) batteries (both hold charge one year) and a full cycle charge. To preserve battery charge, use the viewfinder.
NiMH batteries should be recharged when camera reports batteries low. Old batteries can discharge over night, but may provide normal service immediately after being charged. Battery pairs no longer usable in cameras may work well in flashlights. Do not drop batteries or allow voltage below one volt.
CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged and don't delete. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select, then click Stop and OK.
Never touch battery ends or camera electrical contacts. Oil from fingers will contaminate contacts. Use batteries in matched pairs of same brand and rating. Do not mix old and new batteries. New will only do as well as old.
Digital cameras reset to original settings if batteries are removed for one minute. Time varies with function/camera. Check display/setup menu for non-auto functions and date/time. Remove extra memory to eliminate this as a possible problem. Insert fully charged/cleaned batteries and restart camera. The ultimate non-physical repair for software-using devices is reset by removing power ... VCR/DVD players one month.

Is sound ment to come out of the olympus FE-20 or only when you play back on your pc/tv?
I own olympus MJU-820 (something like that) and when i record video, it records the sound and will play back through the camera, however, i cannot get the sound to play back ont the olympus FE-20!?! I dont know if its broken?
Because of size issues (loudspeakers tend to be big) most cameras don't have one. Once the file is on your computer the soundtrack (such as it is) will be there.
Chris
Where do I find the Serial Number for the FE-20 olympus camera?

I have an Olympus FE-20 camera and when I turn the power button on the light comes on but no display?
When I turn on the power button the 'card access light' comes on but the display screen remains blank. The only way I can get the camera to work is to eject the XD memory card and reinsert it. Any suggestions for how I can fix this?
Seems like the problem lie in the memory card accessing part. I think the memory card might be corrupted (though not fully) Try to insert a new card and see if that solves the problem or not.
What 8GB memory card should i get for my Olympus FE-20 Digital Camera?
Hi folks,
I've been looking around and I am not sure to buy the 8gb xD picture card or microSD card. I plan to take alot of photos for memories in college. Any suggestions?
Thanks
If you buy a MicroSD with adapter, if you ever buy a camera other than an Olympus, you can use it with any other brand but a Sony.

What kind of memory card do I need for a FE-20?
I just bought a new Olympus FE-20 off ebay and now I need to buy a memory card. Do I need to get an adapter too?
you need an xD card, type M+
however if you use an Microsd/sdhc card, you will need an adapter.
Can i charge my olympus fe-20 camera by connecting it to the computer?
Hello,
I pulled up your owners maunal, and no you cannot.
here's how it reads on page 45:
...Power is consumed continuously while the camera is connected to a computer or printer.
Sorry!
Does olympus FE-20 cameras take black and white pictures?
I just got the camera andi am cluess about it-- i dont know if it can take black and white pictures or the kind where everything is black and white and one specific color stays that color?
i mean without the computer edition part. like just through a setting.
how do you upload videos on your computer from a olympus FE-20 camera?
GAHHHH!
how do u get to special effects on olympus fe-20?
i got an olympus fe-20 for christmas. and im trying to figure how to change the effects to black and white or sepia. i know its possible but what do i have to do to get to it?
READ YOUR MANUAL !!!!
You'll be amazed just how much you can learn from that book, and you don't have to wait for strangers to do the work for you.
About the color accent option: it seems to be a current fad that people are getting excited about.
The camera keeps one color and turns everything else black and white.
I would never use such a feature for the following reasons:
• You are very limited in what you can do.
• The function isn't always reliable or accurate. The camera's idea of "red" might be different to yours. It will often include/exclude areas that don't want to be included/excluded.
• Imagine if you just happened to take your best photo ever, but instead of having a real color photo, you only have some partial b&w thing that might look totally awful. You'd kick yourself.
• If you do the "Selective or Partial Desaturation" (as it is called correctly) in post processing, you have much more control over it, and will get a way better result. Plus you can keep your original color version, too.
This also applies to any color effects done in camera like b&w or sepia - you're better off NOT to.
If you don't have your own image editor, you can go to www.picnik.com and use their effects menu which makes it very easy.
