Nikon D1 Digital Camera Review

The D1 can produce 12-bit color images (4096 shades of each color), the Coolpix 990 only 8 bit (256 shades of each color).
The D1 is robustly built, and will take the wear and tear of every day professional use. The Coolpix 990 is a consumer camera, and built to a different standard.
The D1 takes Type II CompactFlash cards, the Coolpix 990 doesn't. While Nikon doesn't endorse IBM Microdrive cards (the primary reason to use Type II) in the original D1, as long as you don't format the card in the camera or delete images using camera controls, the current Microdrives work fine. 1GB of storage goes a long way, even shooting in the non-compressed NEF format (~4MBs per image). [The D1h and D1x support all but the original 384MB Microdrive model. These newer models write to the disk significantly faster, too.]
The D1 has film-like depth of field, while the Coolpix 990's smaller CCD and lenses result in a harder to use (and calculate) depth of field.
The D1 will shoot 21 images at 4.5 frames per second without nary a burp (assuming ISO 200, shutter speed of 1/250 or faster, no flash, and a few other settings). [The D1x produces only 9 images at 3 fps, while the D1h produces 40 images at 5 fps.] The Coolpix 990 can take a low-resolution JPEG movie, but tends to produce long buffer-saving delays at high resolutions. Moreover, the shutter lag--time between pressing the shutter release and the picture being taken--is a blisteringly fast 38ms on the D1, faster than most 35mm SLRs, while the Coolpix 990's response can be as much as a second, depending upon settings (and is almost never 35mm fast).

Photographer comes to Lyon Hall Demopolis Times

— Sometimes, stuff just happens. You build the perfect sand castle and some kid accidentally throws a ball right into it. You’ve written the most beautiful poem that you’ve ever penned, and knock over a full coffee cup, spilling coffee all over your masterpiece.

Noted photographer Farrell Eaves had a similar thing happen to him on a trip to New Mexico in 2001. He dropped his digital camera into the Pecos River, but instead of ruining his camera, it caused him to produce photos with extra color that would otherwise not appear.

Eaves will bring his photos to Lyon Hall at 102 S. Main Ave. in Demopolis on Sunday, May 30, at 2 p.m. He will spend a day photographing Demopolis with his “magic camera,” then exhibit those photos with some of his other works.

In Pecos, N.M., during August 2001, Eaves attended photography master classes taught by Bruce Dale, a former National Geographic photographer.

While he was taking pictures near the Pecos River, Eaves accidentally knocked over his tripod and attached Nikon CoolPix 990 digital camera. They struck a large rock and then splashed into the water. The camera’s memory card compartment snapped open, allowing even more water to enter the delicate electronic assembly.

“It’s not supposed to happen,” Eaves said. “A lot of times, when this happens to a camera, the sensor has to be replaced. Sometimes, it happens across a corner of the image of half of the image. This is the first time it’s ever been known to affect the total image.

“It’s a lot of fun. It’s all composition, which is what photography is about, anyway. I will leave there (Demopolis) telling people that the most precious pictures that they’ll ever take are on their refrigerator door. I can assure you: that’s the truth.”

In the nine years since the mishap, Eaves has taken more than 82,000 photos with the camera.

Eaves can control the color by controlling the amount of light allowed into the aperture.

“Oddly enough, this camera performs best in dim or overcast light,” he said. “I can get more hues — I can make the grass blue, I can make it pink — just by changing the amount of light I let get to that sensor. I use the exposure value to control the light, and it changes the hues immediately. It ranges from +5 to -5, and without moving the camera, I’ve got 10 different shots.

“I was talking with this photographer in Pecos, N.M., and she said, ‘Do you think God pushed the camera in the water?’ and I said, ‘No. I did, and I retrieved it.’ But I said, ‘He had a lot to do with drying it out.”

Eaves has a large 4,000-square-foot shop in Walden, Tenn., where other artists come in to teach their crafts to others. One of those people who takes part in those workshops is Jeff Couch of Linden.

“Our main feature has been J. Christopher White from Loveland, Colo.,” Eaves said. “He is a two-time world champion carver, and he does a one-week course here, and this guy, Jeff, shows up, and he won’t leave.

“He stays with us when he comes; he’s part of the family. He’ll be back in October — we do this in February and October — and it will be his fourth or fifth time to take the class. He’s going to be assisting the instructor this year.”

Farrell’s visit to Lyon Hall is sponsored by the Marengo County Historical Society and the Two Rivers Arts Council. For more information on the event, contact the Marengo County Historical Society at 289-9644 or e-mail marengohistory@bellsouth.net. The next time you accidentally spill ketchup in your quiche or drop your watch in a full kitchen sink, don’t be so quick to throw it away. While you may think you have made a fatal mistake, you may have created a unique work of art.

where can i find a usb cable for a Nikon coolpix 990 camera?

Ah, my favorite $1000 P&S camera. I still have mine with a wide angle and fisheye lens attachment from Nikon.

When I first bought my camera, I used it in the studio for shooting table tops. For that reason it was always on a tripod and attached to an AC adapter, so I never used batteries and never attached it to my computer. I used an old slow 1.1 USB card reader ... (the same USB protocol your 990 uses). To speed copying your image files to your computer, you may want to buy a nice 2.0 USB card reader for your CF card and keep the 990 out of the loop (about $10)

Best Buy, Frys, Circuit City, the list goes on and on.

does anyone have a nikon coolpix 990 ???

my father just got a nikon coolpix 990 i dont know how to use it
it seems that that camera is pretty old cuz i cant find anything about on the net i need ot know what kind of memory card od i need ofr it and how to use is

I've owned a Coolpix 990 since they were first introduced back around 1997/8. It still produces great quality pictures.

It has developed 2 faults in the past couple of years.

The internal battery has stopped being charged, it gets it's charge from the main batteries, so I have to set the image quality back to "Fine" after I recharge the batteries as the camera looses it's settings each time.

My main problem is that sometimes after turning on, the first image taken is corrupted, and the file can't be opened by any application. I tried replacing the CF card but that doesn't fix the problem, has anyone else seen this and know of a fix? What I do is simply take a random first picture rather than risking taking a picture I might need to be good.

All in all though still a superb camera, and the ability to twist the body makes taking low down shots very easy, something you can't do without laying yourself flat on the ground with almost all other digital cameras.

I bought one new for just under $1,000 and bought a fisheye, a wide angle and a telephoto axillary lens. I still own it and use it.

It uses a CF memory card (1GB cards are under $15 right now)

The cameras menu is very straight forward. If you have any experience with cameras at all, you will be able to figure it out.

The Coolpix 990 uses CompactFlash memory. You can use compact flash cards up to 2 GB.

The camera is 3 megapixels. It's a good camera.

Hi, I recommand you to try google picasa.

picasa is a Google's photo software. It's what should've come with your camera.

It can Edit , organise and Share you picture and small video clips.

It's very easy to use and is free, just like Google

Download it free in here:

Good Luck!

Nikon coolpix 990?

l need the cable that conect fron the camara to the computer to download the pictures

For some reason these are hard to come by. I work at a US wide camera store and have to tell people either

A: buy it online and take your chances that it works or
B: get a card reader.

I usually vote for purchasing a card reader - it's faster than downloading your photos from the camera and it doesn't use your camera battery power. Don't pay more than $20, and it just plugs into your normal usb port.

HTH!

Probably the cheapest place you will find the USB cable is on eBay. If you go on eBay and type in "coolpix 990 cable" you will find a ton of people selling the cable. They sell for about $2.95 plus shipping. Just make sure you buy from a seller with high feedback.

Where can i find a Nikon 990 usb cable?

i have a Nikon coolpix 990 and i am in desperate need of a usb cable to transfer my pictures to my computer or is there another way i can transfer them please help anyone

Buy a card reader. They are cheap, and faster than transferring with the camera. You simply put the memory card into the reader, put the reader into your USB, and you are ready to go.
Ordering USB cables for specific cameras can be really expensive!
