Is there an Infrared Filter in a Coolpix 4800?

I have a Coolpix 4800 and if there is a filter in the camera that blocks Infrared light, I'd like to remove it. Is there one?

Yes it does ... actually ALL current digital cameras have IR cutoff filters .. they are called "hot mirrors" IR focuses at a different point, so allowing it to pass through to the sensor can cause apparent softness by the out of focus IR light when it strikes the sensor

IR converted digital cameras place an IR filter in front of the sensor and make corrections in the auto-focus to adjust the focus difference for the IR light.

From a shop, obviously, although it'll cost as much as the camera. Or get a broken one off ebay, that's what I did. Although it worked better than mine so I just ditched my old one.

How can I take digital pictures at night without them getting blurry?

My digital camera is a Nikon Coolpix 4800.

I've been trying to take pictures at a racetrack at night. My daytime pictures come out fine, but whenever I take pictures at night, the images get all blurred looking. At night they light the track (like a stadium). I could understand a picture of a moving car being blurry - but even the pictures I take of people standing still look weird - like the person's blurry twin is standing right next to them.

The manual is confusing - I don 't understand much of the terminology in it.

Simple, you NEED a tripod! :)

use a tripod or set the shutter speed and iso manually. im not familiar with that camera, but you should be able to look in the index of the manual to see how to set it.
iso= how sensitive to light it is. high iso result in grain in your images
shutter speed= how long shutter is open. fast shutter speeds make it less blurry but darker. compensate using higher iso speeds.

How do I upload pictures onto my computer from a digital camera?

This is the second time I'm trying to upload pictures from my Nikon Coolpix 4800 to my Windows XP. It worked fine the first time but now it's not. When I plug it into the computer something comes up and says "Removable Disk (F:) Windows can perform the same action each time you insent a disk or connect a device with this kind of file: Pictures. What do you want Windows to do?" But it gives me no options so I can't do anything!

Once the camera is plugged into the computer, go to My Computer in the Start menu and double click on Removable Disk (F:). That's the memory card drive. Your pictures should be there or in a folder in that drive. Simply select all the pictures and drag-and-drop them into your desired folder such as My Pictures under the My Documents folder.

Remember, never format the memory card using the computer. Once the transfer is done, you can erase the pictures from the memory card using the camera's format option.

There are several causes and possible fixes here, I will enumerate them from simplest to most complicated

1. Since it worked the first time, check your camera settings if you inadvertently changed the camera mode when hooked up to a pc.

2. This happened to me several times already, check your USB cable. clean the ends and make sure they are shiny. I encountered several USB cable ends where the connector had a thin film over it which was enough to make for a flaky connection.

3. A software issue could be causing it too, download the latest drivers / software from the Nikon site and UNINSTALL COMPLETELY , the old drivers and software then install the new one.

4. After trying all of the above and it still does the same thing, I suggest getting on the phone with either Microsoft or Nikon as this might be a know incompatibility.

In the meantime, you might want to consider buying a card reader to be able to download your files and to serve as a backup for those times when you cannot download directly from the camera.

There are some digi cameras you can turn into webcams, they have to support remote/live shooting. Unfortunately yours is not one of them.

I have a Nikon CoolPix 4800, 4 megapixel camera

The Coolpix can be set for various 'quality' settings (Resolution and detail/compression). The higher the quality, the lower the number of pictures on a memory card. In the HIGHEST quality setting, the pictures will be somewhat less than 4Meg, but use that as a estimate. 1GB divided by 4M yields about 250-300 pictures (BEST QUALITY). The Coolpix has settings that take much lower quality which brings the picture size down to 1M or less. Estimate at 1M and you will see the 1GB card will hold 1GB divided by 1M for a total of 1000 pictures(LOWEST QUALITY)!
Again, it really depends on the quality/resolution settings.
