Canon G11 Review Unbeatable.co.uk News

Overview The Canon G series, designed for users who are looking for a picket sized compact with SLR functionality. G-series PowerShot has been the flagship of Canon compact digital cameras, featuring RAW and JPEG shooting formats along with full manual options. In 2007, G9 hit the market with a 12.3 megapixels resolution; G10 progressively featured 14.7 megapixels, but surprisingly G11 only came with a 10.0 megapixels resolution. Lower resolution and a smaller monitor might seem a step back in the consumer’s perspective as the market tends to look forward for the principle of ‘more and bigger’. Instead, Canon explains that the design was meant to improve the ISO noise performance of G10 as it has been criticized; Increasing the physical size of the sensor while retaining the same level of resolution is one of the quickest way to improve the noise performance, according to Canon technical development team. DESIGN The G-series offers the retro look of a classic camera, the metallic design and heavy built body reminds me of my antiquated camera back then, but I know this is one of the elements that many old school users admires. Ergonomics Heavy built with a little bit of a “grip” on the right hand side comes really handy when holding this bulky compact. Right thumb lies naturally on the shutter controller and ISO controller. The flash is located on the left hand corner of the left forefinger and always cause blockage while flashing, but this is just me, I believe this maybe caused by my bad posture, not the ergonomic design of the camera. Accessories One of the major G-series components is the option which allows consumers to install lens and filters. But in my opinion, if I’m adding a lens onto it I rather prefer the DSLR. Underwater Photographers can even team the PowerShot G11 with the specially designed waterproof case WP-DC34 – an underwater housing allowing full control of the camera at depths down to 40m. The option of external flash is also available for enhanced shooting options. Tele-converter TC-DC58D (1.4X) Waterproof Housing WP-DC34 G11 Leather Case with Hand Strap icontrast You can compare when the icontrast was set to auto. A quite impressive result, as we can see the layers becomes clearer and the color is sharper when it is on. icontrast off icontrast on Pros  The New 10.0 megapixel high sensitive CCD sounds like a step back comparing to 14.3 megapixels G11, but increased performance of noise during in high ISO shootings.  28mm wide angle with 5x optical zoom, with stability control (IS), combining the new high sensitive CCD make the G11 outstanding in night captures.  2.8 Inch 461,000 pixel PureColor II VA rotatable monitor, allows the user to take low angle shots in extreme situations.  1cm Macro allows superb quality, capturing the very details of tiny objects.  RAW format which allow the editing easier. Cons  Most of the Compact Digitals, DSLR has included 720P HD Recordings. It is a pity that G11 does not include the function of HD recording with such an outstanding high sensitive CCD.  24mm wide angle would complete the camera perfectly, but I think Canon would leave some regrets for prosumer camera users. Summary G11 has played an important role in prosumer cameras, it has an outstanding performance on daily shots, macro, night shots and even low angle captures, too bad they did not include HD recording. But nothing is perfect, so I’d say the Canon PowerShot G11 is one of the best prosumer out the market.

Can the Canon PowerShot G10 snap clear pictures of fast-moving objects?

For example, if someone hits a tennis ball to an opponent, and I snap a photo right before the opponent hits the ball, does it show up clear and still on their racquet?

Your biggest challenge will be shutter lag. The time it takes from when you press the shutter release to when the camera actually takes the picture. This is a problem with all point and shoot cameras. Other than that if you set your shutter speed high enough (1/250th or more) it will.

The only cameras that have no shutter lag are SLR's. Price for an entry level Rebel XS is not much more than the G10.

It will if you choose shutter priority and a speed of 1/250th of a second or higher. 1/250th is appropriate if the ball is coming directly toward or away from you. You may have to go up to 1/1000th of a second if the ball is moving parallel to the viewfinder.

Has anyone actually got their hands on the new Canon Powershot G10 camera yet?

I'm waiting for them to come in at my local camera store. I think its important to "test drive" a camera if you are going to use it a lot (I intend to) so my buying decision awaits my actually getting my hands on one. Also, how do you like it, and what don't you like? I'm probably going to buy one, but that's hard to do if you can't get them yet! LOL

I'll just regurgitate some reviews I read (see source). I'm looking at the G9 and G10 as well...
-------------------------------------

No question about it! This camera is a great camera, but I guess the people at Canon could have done a much better job. Upgrading from an already great camera like the G9 had to be a very difficult task, but leaving great features out is a poor decision on their part. 5X zoom instead of 6X (addition of wider angle 28mm is great, but don't sacrifice telephoto 210mm). Movie resolution also sacrificied from 1024 X 768 back to 640 X 480. I guess they are not ready, or don't want to be ready for a high res. movie/still camera combo. Cosmetics don't look as good as the previous G9 (kind of funny: it took a while to get used to the design of the prevous models and now they redesign it for worse). The new battery is great at twice the amps, but what about the people that invested lots of $'s on the previous NB-2LH batteries...not good for the consumer. Conclusion, the camera is a great addition to the Canon's digital arsenal, but they could have done a much better job.

-------------------------------------
I would say it's not worth the upgrade from the G9 for most people, but I love the new features on this camera. The viewfinder is much improved. Servo AF is a welcome addition. 28mm equivalent focal length is a big plus for me. The most noticeable improvement is the LCD and interface. Much higher resolution LCD, as well as a tremendous navigation speed improvement over the G9. Images zoom and move fluidly, and start-up and shut-down times are dramatically better.

This would be the most desirable camera ever if they put in a better sensor. Noise is like the G9, but I feel like the digic chip is over-doing the noise reduction, from 200 ISO up.

I'm very happy with my purchase overall.

Does the Canon PowerShot G10 have a black and white setting?

Any help will be appreciated :)

Yes, according to Canon's website, G10 has the following photo effects.

My Colors
Vivid, Vivid Blue, Vivid Green, Vivid Red, Neutral, Sepia, Black & White, Positive Film, Lighter Skin Tone, Darker Skin Tone, Custom

you can upload it onto the computer and any photo program can take care of that for you.

Which Canon camera should I buy? PowerShot SX10 IS, PowerShot G10 or EOS D1000 or any IXUS model? Pls help?

I need something that have 28mm wide for, quick shot, high quality photo result for anything that beautiful, zoom power price range, video recording but best to have. Buget is SGD600 to SG1000. I need a good for value solid camera with great photography result. I am in the entry level and toward mid level.

Even as a Nikon user, I would opt for the Canon Powershot G10. This is a sturdily built camera with a 14.7mp sensor that will give good results.
I've had a good look at this little beauty and I'm quite impressed by the build quality and facilities.
I don't know what the Singapore dollar is worth just now, but you should get a better price where you are, compared to what we Brit's would have to pay. Currently, this camera is about £400 or less in the UK.

Check out the link below for more info.

The 1000D is by far the better camera but it does not shoot video. Zoom range with the kit lens will be the equivalent of a 3x zoom on a point and shoot. You can use any number of lenses if you want more reach though. DSLR's are far superior than point and shoot cameras because they are fully adjustable, have much larger sensors, better optics, faster processors, better analog to digital converters, faster more accurate auto focus and no shutter lag.

The G10 would be the next best camera. It meets all of your requirements. The G10 also offers some adjustability and will shoot RAW files.

The next would be the SX10 IS.

As to which camera is better for you I can't say. If you are willing to learn to use the 1000D and can live with the video feature then it would be the best choice as far as image quality and options. If you want something you can easily carry around and not have to fuss with the controls then the G10 is the better choice. If budget is a concern the SX10 is a really good camera.

I want a Canon Powershot G10 but it's not practical. Ideas?

I really want a Canon Powershot G10 as my next camera. I love the features, quality, style, etc. The only problem is that it's just not practical for me. I don't know much about photography and would never use the exposure compensation dial and honestly would keep it in Automatic most of the time. So, does anybody have any ideas on cameras with really good quality but not so much customization ability?

PLEASE only camera-educated people!!!

I suggest buying the G10 and learning how to actually use it. You obviously know a little about photography since you mentioned the exposure compensation. So why not learn more? Start by studying the Owner's Manual for the camera and then expand your knowledge by reading "The Art of Digital Photography" by Joseph Meehan. Would you buy a car without learning how to drive?

Canon Powershot G10 is highest image quality and editing flexibility.
14.7-megapixel, 3.0-inch PureColor LCD, 5x optical zoom, 28mm wide-angle lens

you can see details and customer reviews in this site.

You know, I think you would use the exposure compensation. Even a G10 doesn't get every scene right. You'll take a picture, see it's not quite right and change the exposure a little. If you have an interest in photography you'll soon be finding those features useful.

If you want to start out with something capable but not so expensive then the Canon Powershot A590IS is a very good choice. You can leave it on auto but it is also a camera that lets you take control if you want to.

If that doesn't sound quite right take a look at this group review of high quality compacts. It was published just last month.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q408premiumgroup/

The G10 is great, no doubt, but it is really more for those who want to tweak the manual settings and control things more in the shot.

If you think you might keep it in auto most of the time then you might want to have a look at the PowerShot SD770 IS...
http://canon-powershot-sd770-is.com

It's a 10 megapixel camera with all the Canon goodies like face recognition, motion detection etc... 3x optical zoom, image stabilization and still gives you a certain degree of manual setting if you want to experiment... You'll also save a bucket on the price of the G10..

Hope this helps...

If you were looking at the G10, then picture quality is something you were taking seriously.

It can be a beast of a compact camera (if it can be called compact anymore) but your money would have been better spent on a entry level dSLR even if you did leave it on auto. The sad fact is that these expensive compacts still have picture quality that's not much better than the $175 compacts because they all use those tiny image sensors crammed with too many pixels.

Finding good pic quality among the compacts is getting harder to find, not easier, but there are still a few out there.

One I'd take a hard look at is the LX3 by panasonic, it's pricey, but has a larger image sensor, and decent high-ISO picture quality for a compact http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicdmclx3/

Dig up an old Fuji f31d http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilmf31fd/

Honestly, I can't name any others that offer truly good pic quality.

The top dogs from Canon like the G9 and 10, and Nikon's p5000/6000 are crap. Sony, Canon and Nikon's other compact offerings are all the same tiny 2.5 and 2.33 image chips with too many pixels and bad photo quality in my opinion. Same for Samsung, Pentax, and olympus.

When I do see a slightly larger sensor, the pixel count jumps to 12 or 14MP so it's right back to the same thing.

For something compact, I'm waiting for Sigma's DP2, I think it's the only thing that isn't too large that will deliver really amazing quality in a fairly compact size. Of course it's going to cost an arm and a leg.

http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/20168/sigma-dp2/

so ?, keep it on auto. you'll shoot yourself in the foot if you move to any other in this range

Which is better Canon Powershot G10, PowerShot SX10 IS or PowerShot SX1 IS?

Why? Which one should I buy?

comparing Canon Powershot G10 to Canon Powershot SX 110 IS. ?

i do not know alot about photography but am excited to learn all about the Canon Powershot G10 that i just purchased. There was also the SX 110 IS that does not have as many mega pixels but more optical zoom. what are the other differences between the two that are more important? is the G10 a good one to learn on?
Thanks

I agree with Judd about the quality of the camera - as everyone will.

Is it easier to learn on??? That's a good question. The G9 was an excellent camera, but (frankly) was not that good for a beginner. You had to know something about photography and camera settings in order to get the best results from the G9.

I hope that the camera maintains the quality of the G9, but I also hope it comes through set up a bit easier to use.

You can read some owner comments here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read_opinions.asp?prodkey=canon_g10

The SX110-IS users rated it as being a bit easier to use:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read_opinions.asp?prodkey=canon_sx110is

I say, pay attention to the manual, get some help, and learn the G10. It's just a much better camera.

Canon EOS Rebel XS or PowerShot G10?

Canon EOS Rebel XS 18-55 (DSLR)
10.1 MP
DIGIC III Image processor
Live view function

Canon PowerShot G10 (Just released)
14.7 MP
5x Optical zoom
28mm wide-angle lens

What to buy?

Really it boils down to Video (g10) vs Image quality..(Eos)

which is more important.? I think the G10 is sexy but a DSLR is ultimately more versatile and will last a lot longer (at least the lenses will) and because of the sensor size is will give much better Image qualilty. More than 10 Megapixels is really a bit of a non issue (its marketing). The G10 is a wolf in sheeps clothing really.

Nikon Coolpix P6000 or Canon Powershot G10?

I've tried out a Nikon Coolpix P6000, but I have yet to get a Canon G10 in my hands because they were just released. Eventually I will be getting a Nikon D700 or something similar, but I need a decent quality camera right now - not months from now. Thanks for your help!

The mega pixel thing is somewhat of a concern but the tech behind the sensors is improving so you're not doomed to noisy pics with a 14 or 13.5mp camera. I am going to get a Nikon p6000 because I like the menus and the design better than the LX3 or G10. They all are great p&s cameras but the highest quality will probably come from the Lumix LX3 because of its lens.

canon powershot sd790is 10mp camera VS canon powershot g10 digital camera. Which is the best?

I have a friend who is a professional photographer, and i want to give him a high spec but handy camera, so far i shortlisted these:- canon powershot g10 digital camera and canon powershot sd790is 10mp camera. But cant seem to digure out which one is the best out of all of them, so let me know and i will make my mind up.

I would way go for canon powershot G10 since you are giving it to a professional photographer, but if you want a low spec and light camera then you can go for sd790is.
