How much Ringgit does Canon Powershot A640 digital camera cost in Kuala Lumpur & frm where can i get it cheap?

I am looking for any of the following camera models to buy from Kuala Lumpur,

Canon Powershot A640
Fujifilm FinePix F30
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5

Kindly send me the price in Ringgit and the best place to buy them for a reasonable price.....thanks a lot.

Probably the cheapest place in KL to get one is a shop in Low Yat Plaza. The ground and seconds floors are where most of the camera shops are.

Go to the first shop you see and ask them for their best price. Write it down, then go to the next shop ask if they can better it. If you do this you can probably get 10%-20% of the first asking price.

Once you have bought they will probably try and sell you some accessories, such as screen protectors and extra memory cards, to make a profit. Turn these offers down as you can probably get them cheaper elsewhere.

If you are looking for a good low light camera, the Canon A640 is not the way to go. The ISO range is good, but in low light, anything above ISO 200 is not much to look at. Most digital cameras suffer from this problem of poor high ISO quality, but this is why many switch to a digital SLR. Speaking of a DSLR, why don't you consider the Nikon D40 or Pentax K100d? They are both much better then most digital point and shoots, and the price is very cheap.

Out of the two other choices, the Nikon L15 and Olympus 770 SW, I would go with the Olympus. It is shock resistant, water resistant, dust resistant, freeze resistant, crush resistant, and can take images up to 32 feet under water. Along with this, it looks and feels great. Just a thought, though.

when using flash with my canon powershot a640 why are the photos DARK?

When I use flash with my canon powershot A640 the photos turn out dark. when i turn off the flash, the photos although not of optimal quality are better. why is this so? Has anyone the same experience? I will appreciate a reply or run through. it was not like this when i first bought the camera (mine is brand new) maybe i just turned a wrong knob??

Well, it's either what Edwin said, or you're just too far form the subject. P&S cameras like yours have very weak flashes. Their normal working range is about 12-15 feet, not more. Sometimes less. Remember the rule of physics, the intensity of light is reverse proportional to the distance you move from the subject. That means take one step closer, and you'll increase the flash effect by an order of magnitude, or close. That's of course if you're within working distance anyway...

You can try to bump up ISO to certain degree, but don't get too crazy there either, as a lot of noise will show up quite quickly.

Do keep in mind - flashes usually spoil the photographs. If you can make a shot without (outside, or lots of available light), you should get a much better result. I mean when it works correctly... So I'm not surprised you're more satisfied with no-flash results in a first place...

Canon Powershot A640 it is good for underwater photography?

Im starting an underwater photography course, and i'd like to buy a good camera but i also need something useful out of water, just for family pictures.
It is a good option?

If you get an underwater housing for it. It is a great camera that I recommend very often, but just don't be misled to think that it is an underwater camera.

The Olympus Stylus 770 SW is okay down to 33 feet. I can't vouch for the image quality, but I know it's made for going underwater without any additional equipment.

If you're just starting this course, you might want to upgrade to better equipment next year, like an SLR in an underwater housing. I'm not sure what bearing that has on your choice, but it may be something to think about. I would personally think about the Olympus with the thought that I could either pass it on to someone or sell it on eBay once I buy a good SLR camera. Or, just keep it for a tiny pocket-sized spare camera. The A640 is too big to fit in your pocket. The light output on the A640 is a bit better, which might matter underwater, unless you will be using auxilliary lighting.

I often take photos of my friends that are in a band and I have trouble getting shots of them without it looking to bright in the room. I would like photos where you can see the colored lights shining on the band and where it looks just as if it were live.

how do i set the selftimer for powershot A640?

i know how to turn it off and on but how do i set the time and use it to take pics?

Two of the settings are programmed to 2 seconds and to 10 seconds by default and you can not change them. The custom timer can be set by choosing the right icon (the one with a "C" in the clock) from the menu and then pressing the MENU button. You then use the up and down arrows (the round multi-function button) to increase or decrease the time.

See page 18-19 of your basic manual for more details with illustrations.

Are the Canon PowerShot A640 and A630 currenlty the latest digital cameras in their cathegory?

Those two cameras are fairly new, but not the newest. If you go to the link below you will see them listed as current models but the A720 IS and A650 IS are a little newer, and in the same category.

They are both still excellent cameras though. If you can find one of them at a much lower price I would still recommend them. However, if you would like Image Stabilization one of the newer ones might be nicer.
