What's in Brad's CES gear bag? Liliputing

I’m on my way to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show, and I thought I’d take a moment to share what’s in my gear bag. I write about mobile technology, so clearly my goal is to travel light and just take the items that I really need with me. On the other hand, this is one of the biggest events of the year for a tech journalist. While a number of products have already been introduced, this will be my first chance to check out many of the laptops I’ve been writing about for the last few months, as well as all those goodies that have yet to be introduced to the world.

My travel kit is a little heavier than I’d like, because unfortunately I dropped my Asus UL20A recently and the display backlight has been on the fritz. The laptop is under warranty and I plan to send it in for repairs soon, but for some reason today it’s been working quite reliably, so I’m hopeful that I can use this 12.1 inch laptop as my primary work machine. It’s thin, light, gets about 6 hours of battery life, and fits beautifully into my backpack.

On the other hand, I’m going to bring a backup machines with me in case my UL20A dies on me again. So I’ll be taking my wife’s Asus UL30A, which is similar in most respects, but it has a larger 13.3 inch display, twice the RAM, and twice the hard drive space. If all goes well, this laptop will spend most of the time in my hotel room and not in the bag I carry with me. Last year I covered the show using an Asus Eee PC 1000H with a 10 inch screen and Intel Atom processor. While I could certainly use a little more horsepower for processing videos this year, I’m still hoping to keep my gear bag light.

Here are a few other things I’m packing:

Targus 15.4″ Groove Laptop Backpack - It’s not the most compact backpack, but you can easily fit a couple of netbooks, plus an umbrella, camera, water bottle, and other goodies in this backpack. And at $35 or less, it’s reasonably cheap. I’ve been carrying one around for the last couple of years. There’s also a pretty good chance that CEA will shove a messenger bag into my hands when I arrive, but I generally prefer a backpack because it distributes weight more evenly. CLEAR WiMAX modem – While CLEAR’s 4G service isn’t available nationwide yet, it is available both in Philadelphia and Vegas. This will be my first time testing the network outside of my home city. Wish me luck. Otherwise, I’ll be spending a lot of time in the CES blogger’s lounge and at my hotel room. Samsung USB DVD-RW drive – Most CES press kits come on old fashioned paper or on USB flash drives. But every now and again, you run across a disc. I’m taking this disc drive along just in case I need it. Canon PowerShot A590 8.0MP digital camera – If you’ve ever wondered what I use to capture pictures and videos for Liliputing, this is it. The PowerShot A590 isn’t the smallest digital camera, but it was a good deal for the price, and as an added bonus it does a respectable job of shooting audio and video as well. You know, if your standards are low. Sanyo Eneloop AA rechargeable batteries – These AAs power my camera, and they’re by far the best rechargeable batteries I’ve ever purchased. While most AAs lose a significant amount of juice after just a few charges, these little guys take a volt and keep on… volting. Dell Axim X50v PDA – For the most part, I just use my PDA for the calendar and contact applications at an event like CES. It has WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities and a web browser, but the browser is too slow and limited to be useful. I am packing an extra large battery so I can use the PDA to watch movies on the plane though, TSA rules permitting. Cheap Nokia cellphone – Sometimes people wonder why I don’t talk more about my cellphone. It’s because I don’t have a smartphone. I rely heavily on netbooks, laptops, and cloud services for most of the functions of smartphones. This helps keep my monthly bill low. As an added bonus, you’d be amazed at how infrequently I need to charge this 3 year old phone. Google Maps , Google Calendar , Google Voice , Zoho Sheet – Those cloud services I just mentioned? Google Voice will help me manage a number of meetings and press calls, Google Calendar (which syncs with Outlook and my Dell Axim PDA) will help me keep my schedule straight, Google Maps will help me get from place to place, and Zoho Sheet will help me create charts comparing new products which I can then access no matter which laptop I’m using at the moment.

Hmm… so much for traveling light, eh? At least I decided to leave my all-in-one printer, scanner, copier, fax behind.

How to use a Canon PowerShot A590 IS ?

I've recently bought a Canon PowerShot A590 IS camera and i don't know how to take awesome pictures with it. I will use it on this friday and need to know how to take black and white pics and beautiful pics at night.
Can you please give me some tips, advices and all??

(i've got the manual about how to use it but i'm soo busy :S)

Hi -- I have a Canon S1 IS. It has similar settings as your Powershot. You know, with B/W pics, I would just take everything in color with the camera. Then later in Photoshop Elements or whatever your photo editor is, you can easily change the photo to 'greyscale', which is black and white. You can even make it sepia-color, like the old tin types.

For night shots, there should be a night mode on the camera -- the icon looks like a moon and/or stars. Try that.

Actually, I wrote a quick "how to" on using the different 'modes' on a camera. You could take a look there and see if any of it helps.

Thanks!
Bryan

read the manual and a few books on photography, or leave it on auto and hope for the best

no matter how busy you are, take time to read the manual, it is very dry reading and could put a hyperactive child to sleep, but i've found it to be most informative.

If you want to take beautiful night shots you should really use a tripod as the shutter speed needs to be slow to get enough light in.

Canon's A series offers several manual functions. There is a night snapshot mode on the camera if you don't have the time to read the manual in order to adjust the setting accordingly. It's on the mode dial (forth below the AUTO). Page 69 in the manual.

As for the black and white, you can find that when you click the "Func. Set" button. It should be the forth option down. Page 104 of the manual.

Reading the manual is the best as they have pictures of the buttons which make explaining what to do easier.

Better camera - Canon Powershot A590 IS or Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ7?

I am planning to buy one of these two cameras and having a hard time deciding between them. They are very similar. I simply want nice photos to e-mail or print 4x6. I take a lot of shots in lower light conditions because my husband plays in a band. I also need good quality video and sound.

Thanks!

The Panasonic is much sturdier than the Canon. My Panasonic was accidentally dropped (not by me) and fortunately it is still working. Like any camera, one should get used to reading the manual - in the end it will save you some headaches. Panasonic has a better lens (Leica).
In my research, there are more Canon fatality than Panasonic.

Panasonic shoots at 30 fps vs Canon's 20 fps (30 is better).
Unfortunately, they do poorly in low light. You can increase the ISO for a better photo. Sounds, well they are both in the inexpensive side so, you get what you pay for. Panasonic though has better video.

i have a lumix, and while i love it, the canons i have owned over the years have been friendlier to use and maintain. the lumix has a lot of user adjustable settings that if you dont know what youre doing you will end up with crappy photos. the canons are pretty much point and shoot.

rule of thumb. figure out how much you want to spend and find the canon camera that fits into your budget

how do i get the different color modes to work on my Canon PowerShot a590 IS?

when im on the func menu it skips over the color changer and two other options. How do I fix this?

I'm guessing you have the dial set to one of the scene/auto/easy modes, which won't let you change the colour setting. You can only do that in the manual modes. Just turn the dial to "P", and experiment away! ;-)

Try reading the manual.

About the color accent option: it seems to be a current fad that people are getting excited about.
The camera keeps one color and turns everything else black and white.

I would never use such a feature for the following reasons:

• You are very limited in what you can do.
• The function isn't always reliable or accurate. The camera's idea of "red" might be different to yours. It will often include/exclude areas that don't want to be included/excluded.
• Imagine if you just happened to take your best photo ever, but instead of having a real color photo, you only have some partial b&w thing that might look totally awful. You'd kick yourself.
• If you do the "Selective or Partial Desaturation" (as it is called correctly) in post processing, you have much more control over it, and will get a way better result. Plus you can keep your original color version, too.

This also applies to any color effects done in camera like b&w or sepia - you're better off NOT to.

If you don't have your own image editor, you can go to www.picnik.com and use their effects menu which makes it very easy.

Does anyone know how long the battery life is in the Canon Powershot A590 digital camera?

Actually, I have not decided on the A590 yet. Although, I am most likely going to buy a Canon. I am trying to decide between the Powershot SD 1000 Elph (if it is still available) and the A590.

Depends mainly on how heavily you're using the LCD and flash.

Using alkalines and the industry-defined "average" usage averages about 200 shots.

Taking available-light pictures with the LCD turned off and using the viewfinder you can get nearly 1000. (Using the viewfinder instead of composing pictures in the LCD also reduces blurry pictures due to camera shake.)

Hi 'Gone Fishing'

You went with the Canon :-) (I'm assumming.)

Try this link: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=183&modelid=16336#ModelTechSpecsAct
It's from the Canon site>Canon 590 IS>Specification...scroll down to 'Power Supply'. It gives you and idea how long the power will last in camera with AA batteries...comparing 'alkaline' and 'Ni-MH' (based if LCD screen is used 100% of the time).

I would suggest trying the Energizer Lithium batteries, they are little power houses. They are definitely worth the extra expense. They are the only batteries that I will use. I even use them over the rechargeable ones that are overrated. I am on my second Canon and I love it!!!

why is the picture quality so bad with my canon powershot a590 IS?

i just bought this camera today, and on the screen it looks good, but when i upload them to my computer it looks like they are in a VERY low quality jpeg format. Is there anyway i can change it? or should i just take back the camera and get something better?

the manual tells you step by step
I have 4 canons
read and re-read the manual

Take it back and have them show you how to set it up for taking the best quality images.

Canon is NOT known for making cameras that produce low quality images.

They may in fact BE in very low quality jpg format.

Read the user manual to find out how to set the image quality.

In fact read the whole book carefully -- it will save you hours of frustration.

Can i use a Canon Powershot A590 as a webcam?

I was wondering if i could just use my camera for right now. If i can use my camera would you mind telling me how i would do it? Thanks!

No, most digital cameras are not designed to be used as webcams.
So, you will need to buy a webcam.

How good are the microphones on a Canon Powershot A590 camera?

The A590IS with 8mp.

They are pretty good but not great. If you are taking a movie of someone speaking, just make sure the camera (and it's mic) are close to the person speaking. This is especially important if there is a lot of background noise when you are recording. If you are close and you are recording in a quiet place, the mic will work pretty well.

Information and Review on the Canon PowerShot A590 IS?

What type of SD card does it use? Do you like this camera? If not, what would you suggest for around the same price?

The A590 is an excellent little camera. Here's the conclusion from an in-depth review: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/canon_a590is_pg5.html
Early on in that review you can read the specs, including storage type. The A590 can use SD/SDHC Memory Card, MultiMediaCard, MMC Plus Card, and HC MMC Plus Card (pick any 1).

What memory card is compatible with the Canon Powershot A590 IS?

Any SD memory card ... that is up to 2 GB. They have been selling for about $11 these past few weeks.

Your camera will also use SDHC cards (4 GB and higher), but putting all those eggs in one basket, is not advised.

Which photo printer works with the Canon PowerShot A590 IS?

Provide links if you have found any that work.

I think that they all will. You remove the memory card from your camera and insert it in the slot in your printer and print away. Or, you put the card into a reader attached to your computer and use your photo software to print your photos.
